Microsoft unleashes Windows 10 IoT Core Services

Windows 10 IoT Core

Following an unveiling at Computex last month, Microsoft has announced it’s unleashing Windows 10 IoT Core Services into public preview.

IoT Core Services enables solutions running on Windows 10 IoT Core to be commercialised and companies to create long-term business models for ongoing value.

One of the most important components of the service is the Device Update Center, where an overview of all devices can be seen and updates scheduled for when appropriate. All updates are delivered using the same CDN (Content Delivery Network) as Windows Update.

For security, the Device Health Attestation (DHA) service allows for evaluating the safety of devices. This is combined with Azure IoT Device Management to help recommend solutions.

Windows 10 IoT Core Services is not a free solution, but it guarantees updates for at least the next decade.

This is the Microsoft’s pricing model:

Businesses and solution integrators can purchase IoT Core Services through an Azure subscription. The subscription price will be $0.30 per device per month when the product releases later this fall. During the preview period, the price is $0.15 per device per month.

Partners enrolled in our Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program will be able to resell the service and establish ongoing relationships with their customers. They can sell a flexible, pay-as-you-go subscription as needed to meet device requirements. This option will be available later in the year.

OEMs can license the service with a device by pre-paying for the service. This option will be available later in the year.

Microsoft expects a major release every two to three years, each offering a further guaranteed 10 years of support.

This guarantee is vital for peace-of-mind when planning a long-term IoT deployment. Nobody wants to spend money on a solution that may be outdated and in need of replacement before long.
