Connected-home technology company Wondrwall has launched what it claims is the world’s first truly smart home-automation system, with the aim of converting “standard homes into intelligent homes” – houses that can make decisions for themselves.
The concept is based on replacing standard light switches with new switches that contain 13 different sensors. These monitor temperature, humidity, power, motion, luminosity, and sound. In this way, a typical three-bedroom house could contain a network of more than 100 such sensors, according to the company.
The Wondrwall system uses the data from these sensors in its software platform, where machine learning and predictive modelling mean the home can make decisions autonomously. For example, it could make real-time adjustments to heating, lighting, and security settings.
This is unlike systems that rely on users making changes through an app on their phone. But human interaction is still possible: Amazon Alexa voice control is fully integrated into each light switch, for example. In addition to allowing voice control of heating, lighting and security, this opens up access to other Alexa functions.
What does it cost?
According to the company, the cost of installing the Wondrwall system into a typical three-bedroom house is £1,332.
Wondrwall is particularly interested in working with builders of new homes, it says. It has 10 national housebuilders in the UK rolling out the technology, and says it is in talks with another 60.
